I read somewhere many years ago that the Caldwell Estate in the early 1700's was of over 17,000 acres. This is an extermely large area. I presume that it covered the hill area between Lugton Water and the River Cart and include the properties of Cowdams and Glanderston and went as far as Newton Mearns in the East. Of course this was Mure property and had nothing at all to do with Caldwell's.
The Mure's at one stage were one of the richest families in Scotland. There has been talk of the stones from a dismantled castle being used elsewhere but as far as I know the Caldwell Tower is just a tower. This was the most commn form of defensive retreat in Scotland and was used more as a protection in lawless times from marauding "broken men" and in feuds with neighbours. It is doubtful if they would have been much use in defence against a determined organised force. The tower that I believe is the Caldwell Tower is located near Uplawmoor. There is another tower that might be a "Caldwell" Tower on the road between Lugton and Howwood near Reivoch and the Barcraigs Reservoir. Then there is the Iron-Age Fort on Walls Hill just to the south of Kilbarchan. I would like the address of the map site so that I might look up the map references and compare them with my own references. I have a copy of an etching of Caldwell Tower from the Mure Papers and also a photograph taken of the Tower at a more modern date. I would post them up on this site if I ever could figure out how to post images. Messages In This Thread
