"Ordered to Detroit" In 1782 Captain Caldwell with a detachment was ordered to Detroit. Here he renewed acquaintance with Thomas McKee formerly in charge of the British Indian Department at Pittsburgh but then making Detroit the headquarters of the Western Department. Also at Detroit he found Matthew Elliott and Simon Girty both active in the operations of the frontier. The emergency then facing Detroit was the march of Colonel William Crawford from Kentucky settlements
At length the little Army reached the Sandusky plains, and in a marshy area where the horsemen were at a disadvanage, the combined British and Indian attack began, June 4, 1782. Many were killed in the initial attack, and the Kentuckians were completely disorganized, fleeing from the site in small parties. Only a few returned to Kentucy. The Indians endeavoured to capture the leaders, reserving for them the penalty of being burnt at the stake, and for this purpose each Indian town was alloted some of the captives. Crawford himself was executed, but Williamson, the cause of the whole affair, escaped to Kentucky. Capt. Caldwell in this action received two wounds testifying to his activity in the face of the enemy. Messages In This Thread
