Hall or Tour of Caldwell Estate

For anyone interested there is a version of the Mure of Caldwell family history available at www.electricscotland.com under "Games Burke's Landed Gentry" as "From Caldwell to Tasmania" an interview of the heir of the name by Sarah Powell.

I have possession of a copy of the Mure family tree, It's very complicated as a lot of the time they were marrying cousins to keep the land all under the one family name. The Rowallan Estate was gained through marriage to "Comyne" Heiress. Their-in lies another tale. There is an old legend about the Name of the Rowallan Estate, It's quite a story about a Hoary old Chief out in a boat on the Firth of Clyde getting caught in a sudden storm, seems he was a brave man in battle but a bit sea sick, it's best described in an old poem

"A Scottish Chief in days of old
as hoary headed sires have told was tossed upon the main

Small was his skiff, the tempest blew The trembling Chieftain urged his crew the distant shore to gain

"Row Allan Row" The Baron cried, high on the foaming surges ride and bear me safe to shore.
A rich domain on Carmel-side o'er hill and dale extending wide is thine for evermore.
The Quiv'ring oar bold Allan stretched, the solid land the Baron reached, and Allan won the prize.
Adorned with ropes of twisted stone (a design on Rowallan Castle stonework)
Long on thy banks Rowallan blown but still the storm defies

Any way I'm allways one for the legends as once in a while there's a bit of truth.

Back to the Mures/Muires/Moores/Mores
The first name I can find is Moore of Polkelly, Arnock, Ayrshire (probably Polkelly farm, Airtnoch is a farm near Fenwick Ayrshire) This Moore is a relation/son of the Famous Rory O'MORE and reputedly crossed the Irish Sea with him.
Two houses descended from him.Sir Robert Moore of Rowallan married the Comyne Heiress of Rowallan (very powerfull Celtic family)their daughter Janet married her cousin Sir Adam Moore of Polkelly:- their son also Sir Adam now of Polkelly & Rowallan married a sister of Robert Stewart Earl of Strathearn:=their daughter Elizabeth married her cousin Robert,Earl of Strathearn afterwards King Robert 2nd of Scotland. The other branch were David de Moore (appeared as witness to a charter of Alexander 2nd of Scotland) his son Sir Reginald Mure was Lord High Chancellor of Scotland in 1329 who married Ann Graham of Eskdale & Abercorn and their son Gilchrist(son of Christ) married The Heiress of Caldwell who died 1399. Their son John was the first of that name to bear the title "of Caldwell in 1409. Hope this is of interest to some of you as although the name had become Moore they were still descendants of the Caldwell blood. A cadet branch (meaning from a younger brother)of the name CALDWELL still owned Wester or Little Caldwell and continued to be a respectable Renfrewshire family untilthe end of the 17th century when it failed in the possession of John Caldwell who was one of the Commissioners for Renfrewshire to the Scottish Parliament after the Revolution. His Estate passed to the Earl of Dundonald, and later to the Duke of Hamilton, from whom it was purshased by Baron Mure. David Caldwell
