There is a marked difference in the known genealogy between Rev. James Caldwell and Rev. David Caldwell. Rev. James Caldwell's genealogy can be traced back to 1558. Rev. David Caldwell was as poor as Jesus: no known grandfather.

I erred in stating that Bret Harte, the author of the poem, Caldwell of Springfield, retired to Glasgow. Bret Harte stayed in Glasgow for several years only as a consulate, after serving a similar position for several years in Germany.

Mark Twain credited Bret Harte with improving his style, As the editor of the Overland Monthly, Harte hired Twain as a writer. Twain claimed that Harte "trimmed and trained and schooled me from an awkward utterer of coarse grotesqueness to a writer of paragraphs and chapters."
