I think Uallas is more of a Gaelicisation of the old French Wallas rather than the other way - to neat a solution (but it is hard to tell with any certainty).
Rheged was a kingdom rather than a king. I seem to remember that the last king of Rheged (Owain? have to check his name - sounds "Welsh") was blinded after seeing his sons put to death in front of him.
Now we have social security at least.
