John Caldwell=son of Cub Creek John
By:Gwen Caldwell Quickel
Date: 04:01 8/15/05

My research tells me that the son of Cub Creek John did not go to South Carolina.

The Caldwells did not go to SC until ca 1770, and if John, William's brother,had gone about tha time, he would have been 55 years of age--and lame--and, though possible, would not have started a new family and fought in the
Revolutionary War there.

So much incorrect information has been published and repeated over and over. For instance, from the manuscript of Major France:

"John Caldwell, the 5th child of Captain John and Margaret Caldwell, was born in Ballyoogan Parish, Donegal County, Ireland, 20 March 1715, and died in Maury County, Tennessee, 30 October 1795; married 16 June 1746 at Cub Creek to Jane Kennedy, who died in 1780, aged 60 years."

There was no Maury County, Tennessee in 1795! And, the Caldwells of Halifax County, VA did not indeed go to Maury County, Tennessee until 1809 and 1810, but not the son or grandsons John. It was grandson John Caldwell that did die 30 October 1795 in Halifax County intestate. It took fifteen years for his estate to be settled plus there were several minor children. I have documents concerning the long drawn out settlement of the estate.

With a process of elimination my research shows the John Caldwell in South Carolina could not have been the son of Cub Creek John Caldwell even though there was a letter written later on that stated he did.

The son of Cub Creek John was "lame" as described in a deed in Halifax County. His land was on the Dan River and was adjacent to Pittsylvania County, VA. The land was divided between his two sons, John and Allen Caldwell. It was this John Caldwell, son of John Caldwell and grandson of Cub Creek John Caldwell that died in Halifax County, VA on the 30 October 1795.

Also, in the manuscript by Major France, he lists the children of John that supposedly were the children of the supposed son of Cub Creek John Caldwell. I have never come across any of these names in my lineage. There was Alexander, James, Captain Anthony, Samuel and William. I believe Major France was jumping ahead several generations into the family that did go to Maury County, Tennessee, in the years 1809 and 1810. The documents in Halifax County, VA tell the true story in the settlement of John Caldwell's estate who died 30 October 1795, intestate.

In addendum i would like to add that the John Rodgers, son of Margaret Caldwell and William Rodgers is said to have been born 25 January 1747. John Rodgers was in his 79th year when he wrote the letter to his cousin, Elias B. Caldwell, son of James Caldwell, who lived in Washington City. He said, in part, "Uncle John went to South Carolina and died there." Many take this statement as absolute;
however, it seems questionable that a 79-year old person who was only six years of age when his Uncle John left the Cub Creek area in 1752, could be certain where he went. Various articles on the South Carolina Caldwells do not report the information the same.

I believe the documents on record in Halifax County, Va to be correct.
