I heard somewhere that there was a Scots tax based on the number of windows and possibly their size.
The thrifty tax conscious Scots therefore kept windows to a minimum.
I also heard that the tax was payable as long as there was a roof on the house and that the owner of Loudon Castle burned the roof off it when he found that he could no longer afford its upkeep.
