CaldwellGenealogy.com Discussion ForumTerra de Caldwell (what was meant?)

Date: 22:57 1/15/06 Rozanne Just trying ot get back some of my schoolboy latin Is the reference inthe "Monestum" only once? and does it say exactly "Terra de Caldwell"? Just trying ot find the exact meaning of the term. "Terra" can be nominative, vocative or ablative according to my latin primer and the declension of Caldwell would be important to see whether the land was from Caldwell or Caldwell's plural or belonging to Caldwell or simply land called "Caldwell". It is easy to assume that the land belonged to the Caldwell family but a closer inspection might reveal something different. Unfortunately I was not very good at latin and it was a long time ago. If there is more than one mention then we might be able to get a better perception from how it is described. We are also relying on the scribe being technically proficient in latin as well and that was not always the case. For example even my rough latin would say that it should not have been described as plain English proper-noun "Caldwell" but rather Caldwella or Caldwellensus or Caldwellae - my lack of detailed latin knowledge shows horribly but you will get my drift. Therefore it could even have the meaning "the former lands of the Caldwell's" as much as it could be "Caldwell's Land" or "the land now held by the Caldwell's". Singular or plural. Getting the true meaning of the term might tell us a lot. Tom
