Where do Caldwell's come from?

Check this link that my daughter Felicity found:

Seems to indicate that Kilmarnock, where I was born, is a sometime high-density Caldwell location - note that Ayrshire is a more dense Caldwell region than Renfrew.

More or less what I was saying - that there is quite a tribe of Caldwell's in Ayrshire and that Caldwell-Renfrew is a bit romantic. However there is not doubt that there are a lot of Caldwell's in Renfrew - just that there is as much distribution in Ayrshire to debunk the Caldwell Tower source of the family (entirely).

It is also interesting to note the relatively low numbers of Caldwell's in England and that most of them are in the Worcestershire/Shrophire region. This seems to indicate a Fitzallan connection which also bears up with the even distribution over Renfrew/Ayrshire in Scotland. Also note the high numbers in Northern Ireland and in the USA. Seems to indicate a South-West Scotland origin to Northern Ireland and from there to the USA and Canada.

You can also have fun looking up the origins of all the other names connected ot your family.

Enjoy :)

Tom
