...well

I know that wells (water wells) were venerated in the English Midlands but always thought that this was not true of Scotland.

I have just noticed that St Conval is the patron saint of East Renfrew and that he has two wells named after him (Thornliebank and Barrhead).
"Convalwell" ??? don't think so - but I thought I would note it anyway.
This introduces the subject that there are a large number of families with their surname ending in "well".
To follow the Anglo-Saxon name theory they should all refer to water.
Names that spring easily to mind are:
Caldwell, Carswell, Maxwell, Bothwell, Blackwell .. there are obviously others, and they seem to be lowland names
which backs the Anglo-Saxon and water theory.

All thoughts welcome.
