There seems to be some comment about the location of Castle Caldwell being at Enniskillen.
This is not true.
Castle Caldwell is near Belleek at the other end of Lough Earne on a promentory from the northern shore.
The confusion arises from the fact that the ancestor John Caldwell who PURCHASED the property from the Blennerhasset family (and renamed it) was listed as a defender of Enniskillen in the preceding Irish revolt. John Caldwell was a trader who brought goods up from Dublin overland and sent them down Lough Earne by boat. That family had very extensive estates around Enniskillen and Belleek ("their" village) and elsewhere around Lough Earne. Therefore the "Castle" was only one of their properties - but it became their "seat" and the jewel in the crown. No doubt they retained their interests and assets invested at Enniskillen as well. The family inter-married extensively with other landed Northern Irish families and with English families. Their connections were back to London and England and they do not seem to have retained any links whatsoever back to Scotland. They may even have embraced the Anglican faith but I am not sure of this. Their connections to North America were through Canada and they were very definately on the English side during the War of Independence. The male line is said to have become extinct (John B Cunningham) but I doubt that this is correct.
It is possible that one of their family could have founded a US line but on present evidence it seems unlikely. Certainly the documented main line passes through daughters in England.
I believe that the Irish Caldwell lines in the US have come from other Caldwell families.
