CaldwellGenealogy.com Discussion ForumDavid's response to Tom re: "Border Reivers"

Date: 08:40 8/26/02 David: I found your response to Tom regarding Highland and Lowland Scots (Border Reivers) very interesting. If you were writing tongue-in-cheek, or trying a bit of satire, forgive me for missing it, and ignore the rest of this.
May I ask if you can point me to a source for your statement that the Highlanders were Anglicans? When I read that it seemed I could hear my Highlander father rising and rumbling from his place of rest in reaction to this statement. I can assure you that it simply wouldn't do to repeat in polite company his opinion of the English and their monarchy. The Highlanders had (have) no kind feelings for the English or Lowlanders. One might say their feelings, one for the other, were reciprocated in like kind. But this is common knowledge which we all know. The Highlanders were, if anything, Catholic. They were aligned with the French (long of the Catholic persuasion) in the Auld Alliance, and invariably backed the Catholic Stuarts in their futile attempts to regain the throne (much to the Highlanders' loss). Eventually, various missions to the Highlands (likely, mostly Weefrees) succeeded in dividing church allegiances.
