Date: 21:02 2/27/03 Hello again all Caldwell buffs. I've just returned from my annual trip to the old country to see my son and two grandsons mainly, but also to get some more research done. I had a couple of good days in the Dick Institute, Kilmarnock and had some luck in the Ayrshire Old Parish Records on micro, getting right back to late 16th cent..Unfortunately just before coming back to Manitoba our car was broken into and two suitcases of clothes and my briefcase containing my last 25 years of research and what I had found this trip was stolen. Fortunately I have some of it duplicated but some is gone forever, or until I dig it up again. (could John put a sad face here) More on our name though :- There is a very good site now at nls.scotland where there are a lot of old maps from 16th cent on. there was even a burn or stream known as Caldwell Burn near Mauchline but more to the point, and hopefully this will put paid to the Solway thingy, there was a large area of North East Ayrshire/Renfrewshire named as Annandale in the 16th/17th century. No doubt some immaginative scribe doing family research from the other side of the Atlantic saw Annandale Scotland and naturaly assumed there was only one i.e. on the Solway. O.K.
